The team should end with a source matrix that captures source, theme, method, and limitation, not just a fluent summary that cannot be checked.

Separate search, screening, and synthesis
Many teams ask AI to handle literature review as one combined task, which makes errors hard to locate. A more credible process separates the work into search, screening, and synthesis. Each stage should produce an auditable output.
During search, record databases, search terms, and search dates. During screening, record why each paper was included or excluded. During synthesis, separate findings, methods, samples, and limitations.
The source matrix is central
A source matrix protects the team from fluent summaries without evidence. It should include author/year, theme, method, data or sample, key finding, limitation, and relevance to the research question. If AI helps fill the table, the team must verify entries against the original papers.
Where AI helps
- Suggest initial themes after criteria are defined
- Compare similarities and differences across papers
- Identify possible evidence gaps, then verify them
- Draft synthesis paragraphs from the matrix, not from model memory
Watch carefully
AI may group papers with contexts that are too different, infer causality from correlation, or invent citations. Any important claim must be traced back to the source before use.
